Information for schools

Overview

The History program aims to bring the historical skills and knowledge of its staff to debates on public issues and to involve members of the community with historical interests in our programs. We aim to foster links with schools through a range of faculty and departmental schemes, through The Melbourne University Program for High Achieving Students, and through support for history teachers’ associations and their programs. Many of our events and public lectures and our conferences and seminars are targeted towards those in the general public and broader educational community who have historical interests.

University of Melbourne Extension Program

The Extension Program is for high-achieving Year 12 students, that gives them the opportunity to study a first-year university subject sequence while still at school. Endorsed by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA), the Extension Program program gives students a taste of University life and at the same time can contribute to their ATAR. At present the School of Historical and Philosophical studies offers two subjects to students, which include ‘Philosophy’ and ‘History and Philosophy of Science’. For more information please consult the Study University of Melbourne Extension Program (UMEP) web page.

Master Class Program

Master Class is a free program for Year 10 students, run annually between July and September. Lectures are offered on a variety of topics by outstanding academic teaching staff from the University of Melbourne. You will learn about interesting topics in an interactive and informative environment and at the same time, gain an understanding of how a university works. By attending one or more of the Master Class series, you can sample interest areas and think more about what appeals to you when choosing subjects for VCE.
