PhD Completion Seminar, Phoebe Weston-Evans
You are warmly invited to attend Phoebe Weston-Evans' Completion seminar titled:
Silence in the Works of Patrick Modiano
Patrick Modiano was awarded the 2014 Nobel Prize in Literature for work that ‘uncovered the life-world of the Occupation’, acknowledging his role in dispersing silences entrenched in this dark period in France’s history. Modiano’s literature, however, abounds in silences, the unsaid and the unsayable; it simultaneously indicts and is permeated by silence. Recognising divergent definitions and interpretations of silence, my thesis seeks to illuminate the nature of this tension across Modiano’s twenty-seven novels, spanning almost five decades from La place de l’étoile (1968) to Souvenirs dormants (2017).
