CONREP Final Event: Showcasing CONREP

The Comparative Network on Refugee Externalisation Policies (CONREP), funded by a Jean Monnet Erasmus+ Network grant, is an international, interdisciplinary Network of experts from seven universities in Australia and Europe. It was established to deepen  understanding of the impact and effect of refugee externalisation policies across two regions: Australia’s activities in Southeast Asia and the Pacific; and the European Union and its member states’ activities in North Africa and the Mediterranean. Since the network commenced in September 2018, CONREP researchers and invited participants have focused their activities on five core themes

1. Governance: the implications of externalisation policies adopted by state and non-state actors at different levels of governance.
2. Legitimacy:  the impact of externalisation policies on the legitimacy of states and regional bodies.
3. Responsibility: the effects of the exercise and the delegation of legal and political responsibility on refugees affected by externalisation.
4. Democracy: how externalisation limits the exposure of these practices to the scrutiny of regional and domestic democratic institutions.
5. Human Rights: the impact of externalisation policies on access to human rights protections for refugees and asylum seekers.

With the grant coming to an end in August 2022, this event marks the final public event of CONREP. It will provide an opportunity to bring together the Network’s researchers from the seven partner universities (the University of Melbourne, Deakin University, Monash University, Western Sydney, the University of Bologna, the University of Geneva and the University of Gothenburg) to present the work that they have undertaken during the grant, to present the many outputs that CONREP researchers have produced and to show how CONREP partners will continue their collaboration in the coming years.

A significant element of this event will be the award of prizes. We will be presenting awards to the winners of the CONREP Prizes for the best publications and creative works. Prize winners will have the opportunity to describe their winning publication/creative work.

As CONREP members are located in Australia and Europe, the event will be held on-line to facilitate the participation of all CONREP members and to allow for the participation of a wide audience from around the world. The event will also be recorded.
