Internship: Personal and Career Growth

Explore the Internship: Personal & Career Growth subject at UniMelb. This page outlines everything you need to know to plan your application

Complete an internship as part of your studies

These internship subjects can be taken as electives for Bachelor of Arts students and as a breadth option for students from approved courses (including exchange students). This page is relevant for students that are planning to enrol in the following subjects:

Students should select the subject that best matches their current level of study: MULT20010 is a second-year subject, and MULT30019 is a third-year subject.

About the Subject

Internship: Personal and Career Growth combines 80 to 100 hours of placement at a host organisation of the student’s choice with learning activities and assessments designed to support the development of students’ professional and personal identities. The final assessment – a personal or professional portfolio – provides an opportunity for students to critically reflect on their internship experiences and produce a tangible resource for their futures.

Attend an Information Session

Information Sessions will be hosted by the Subject Coordinator and the Experiential Learning Team before the start of each intake.

During the session, you will learn about the subjects in more detail and review the application and approval process. There will also be a time for questions at the end.

Current students can login to watch the recorded session for information for the Summer Term and Semester 1 2026. Please check this page for updates on the next information session for Semester 2 2026.

Internship Process

Students must complete all steps in the process to ensure that they are enrolled and their internship is approved.

  1. Apply

Apply for the subject before the deadline.

  2. Enrol

Once you receive your  approval email you can complete the enrolment modules on canvas.  After 7-10 days, you will be automatically enrolled in the subject of your choice.

  3. Submit

When you have secured an internship you need to submit the details of your internship by completing a 'Risk  Assessment Form'. This form and instructions will be provided to students after they are enrolled.

  4. Sign

Once your internship has been approved by the subject coordinator you will receive a copy of the internship agreement. This needs to be completed and signed before you start your internship or you will not receive credit for your hours.

Finding an Internship

Students are responsible for securing their own internship and need to complete at least 80 hours of placement. An internship needs to be confirmed by the end of the second week of the semester, or you will be asked to withdraw from the subject.

Consider the following when selecting an internship:

  • Must be a new opportunity. Internships at your current place of employment will not be approved.
  • Internships must start and end within approved dates and be completed across the semester.
  • Must have clearly defined roles and a supervisor.
  • Maximum 100 hours for an unpaid internship.
  • The organisation needs to have at least 5 full-time employees and startups are not eligible.
  • Internships with a family member or at a family business are ineligible

Due to the complexity of assessing the appropriateness of an internship we cannot list all criteria that may apply to obtain approval.
