Complete an internship as part of your studies

Journalism Internship (JOUR90003) is available to students that are enrolled in The Master of Journalism or The Master of International Journalism. This page contains the information you need about enrolling and finding an eligible internship.

About the Subject

In this subject, you'll undertake a 20-day (or full-time equivalent) internship with a media organisation matched to your interests and skills.  The internship offers a chance to apply your coursework in real-world contexts, build strong communication and collaboration skills, and grow your industry knowledge and networks. You'll also reflect on your experience to identify strengths and areas for further development.

The subject is available through  the Capstone Stream 2 option and students can check the relevant handbook entry for further details.

Attend an Information Session

During the information session, you will learn about the subject in more detail and review the application and approval process. There will also be a time for questions at the end.

You can view the latest information session through the link below. Details for the next information session for Semester 2 2026 will be  posted here and emailed to journalism students.

Internship Process

Students need to complete all steps in the process to ensure that they are enrolled and their internship is approved.

  1. Apply

Apply for the subject before the deadline.

  2. Enrol

Once you receive your  approval email you can complete the enrolment modules on canvas.  After 7-10 days, you will be automatically enrolled in the subject.

  3. Submit

When you have secured an internship you need to submit the details of your internship by completing a 'Risk  Assessment Form'. This form and instructions will be provided to students after they are enrolled.

  4. Sign

Once your internship has been approved by the subject coordinator  you will receive a copy of the internship agreement. This needs to be completed and signed before you start your internship.

Finding an Internship

Students are responsible for securing their own 20-day internship and will be supported by the Subject Coordinator. Once enrolled, you can submit the details of your internship to be approved by the subject coordinator and complete an internship agreement. Consider the following when selecting an internship:

  • Must be a new opportunity (not your current role).
  • Internship must start and end within approved dates.
  • Must have clearly defined roles and a qualified supervisor.
  • The organisation needs to have at least 5 full-time employees.

Please be aware that due to the complexity of assessing the appropriateness of an internship we cannot list all criteria that may apply to obtain approval.
