GSHSS Academic Culture and English Tutorials
A free, not-for-credit, six week program for graduate students who have English as an additional language. Designed to help develop your English Language skills for use in the academic graduate environment.
The Academic Culture and English Tutorials (ACET) Program is a free, six-week, not for credit series of tutorials run by Dr Megan McIntosh for graduate coursework students in the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences who have English as an additional language.
This seminar series is designed to help you transition confidently into graduate study at the University of Melbourne. Each week introduces key academic skills, strategies, and support systems to help you succeed in your coursework, research, and university life. You’ll learn how to navigate graduate program structures and expectations, participate effectively in seminars and group discussions, and manage your time and assessments with confidence. The series also covers critical reading, effective notetaking, academic writing, using library and online resources, and maintaining academic integrity.
This program is free of charge to students who apply and are accepted to participate. Please note that your registration is not confirmed until you receive confirmation of your tutorial from the teaching staff. Limited places available. Preference will be given to students in their first semester of study, on a first-come first-served basis.

English Corner
English Corner is an optional six-week conversational and skills-focused program that runs in the six weeks following ACET.
Designed as a relaxed and interactive space, English Corner allows students to practise spoken academic English and explore topics in greater depth. Participants will be invited to discuss topics such as oral presentations, refining academic writing style, using library resources, among others.
English Corner provides a supportive environment to ask questions, practise professional communication, and build confidence in using English across academic and professional contexts.
