DOMINION Exhibition Launch
Engaging with the work of contemporary international and Australian artists and drawing on the collections of the University of Melbourne and The Johnston Collection, DOMINION is the latest exhibition to feature in the Arts West Gallery.
Join us to launch this illuminating exhibition and the 2023 Being Human Festival.
DOMINION brings together six contemporary artists to reinvigorate notions of dominion as a space for power which exists beyond confines of time and the singular notion of humanity. It is one that breaches concepts of both the political and sublime to reveal the corporeal being beyond the temporal and subcelestial. The subjectivities arising out of the Enlightenment, and subsequently problematised in European Romanticism, are renegotiated through the narratives of the artists, not as a condition of the past, rather as a revelation or truth which has been cloaked in the passages of time.
Enjoy an evening of refreshments, engaging conversations with experts, and an exploration of the unexpected as we delve into the question of what it means to be human.
Presented in partnership with the Enlightenment Romanticism Contemporary Culture (ERCC) research Unit Melbourne Public Humanities Initiative (MPHI).
The exhibition doubles as prelude to and keynote for the ERCC’s conference Inventing the Human (29 November—2 December 2023).
