Title: 'Dear Reader: Bookish Adventures and Players as Readers in Virtual Reality Games’

Date and time: Wednesday 14 October 2020, 1:00-2:00PM AEST

Registration: Closed

Abstract: Drawing on recent Virtual Reality games Moss (2018) and Déraciné (2019), this paper will explore why books and the experience of reading are key to the future worldbuilding and immersive potentials of VR gaming. Expanding on Once Upon a Pixel (Paterson, Williams, Cordner 2019), and with reference to Souvik Mukherjee's Video Games and Storytelling: Reading Games and Playing Books (2015), I will analyse the tensions between reading, remembering, and playing in VR storytelling.
