Infrared examination

Infrared reflectography (IR) is a non-destructive analytical technique used at the GCCMC for further detailed examination of an artwork and the artist's technique. IR can further reveal preparatory underdrawing and compositional changes in the paint layers and is therefore a useful tool for assessing an artist's technique. Underdrawing materials such as charcoal and graphite are easily detected, while other materials such as chalk and inks do not reflect light in the infrared range and are not apparent in infrared light. Infrared may also be used to identify any areas of previous restoration and further enhance faded inscriptions.
