The Research Unit for Indigenous Language works with Indigenous communities across Australia and the region to expand and strengthen Indigenous language research, and to support efforts by communities to maintain their linguistic and cultural heritage.
The Research Unit has a range of expertise to help individuals, communities and organisations whether they have been doing language work for many years, or are just starting out. We can provide support in the following areas:

  • Accessing and interpreting language resources like manuscripts and recordings
  • Creating dictionaries
  • Making and transcribing language recordings
  • Using technology to support language work
  • Understanding the sounds and spelling of Australian Indigenous languages
  • Understanding linguistics and the structure of Australian Indigenous languages
  • Creating resources in your language
