You are warmly invited to the launch of Burnout Market Feminism: Urban Chinese Businesswomen in the Internet Age (MIT Press, 2026) by Dr Ling Tang. What does it mean to be a successful woman in China today, and what does success cost?

This book follows the lives of elite urban businesswomen in China's Internet Age, exploring how they navigate a world that simultaneously rewards and exhausts them. Drawing on years of fieldwork in Shenzhen and Hefei, it offers an intimate and unflinching portrait of feminism, ambition, and burnout in contemporary China.

The author will introduce the book's key ideas, followed by responses from three panellists and an open Q&A. All are welcome — no prior knowledge of the topic needed.

Panellists:

  • (Chair) Prof. Fran Martin, prof. in cultural studies, University of Melbourne
