This one-day symposium will reflect on the legacy and contemporary relevance of Jacques Lacan’s seminal essay “Science and Truth,” on the occasion of its 60th anniversary. Originally presented as the opening session of Lacan’s Seminar XIII (1965-1966) and published in 1966 as the inaugural article of the Cahiers pour l’analyse and as the final chapter of Lacan’s Écrits, this core work of high structuralism continues to challenge philosophies of truth, knowledge, and subjectivity extending back to at least the time of Descartes. The symposium will map the essay’s major theoretical and rhetorical provocations and innovations, and consider how these can be addressed to and beyond our present moment.
