Join us for a panel discussion with the ngangkari traditional healers of the Ngaanyatjarra, Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara Lands, to mark the new edition of their award-winning book.

Our panel will feature Rene Kulitja, Pantjiti McKenzie, Marita Baker, and Jennifer Mitchell.

Ngangkari are senior Aboriginal people authorised to speak publicly about Anangu (Western Desert language speaking Aboriginal people) culture and practices. For thousands of years, ngangkari have looked after the physical and emotional health of their people. The ngangkari currently employed at NPY Women's Council deliver treatments to people across a tri-state region of about 350,000 sq km, in more than 25 communities in SA, WA and NT. Acknowledged, respected and accepted, these ngangkari work collaboratively with hospitals and health professionals even beyond this region, working hand in hand with Western medical practitioners.

The new edition of Traditional Healers of Central Australia: Ngangkari  continues to honour the history of ngangkari practices and the traditional healers who have come before while sharing a new collection of stories, artworks, and insights from practising ngangkari.

This event will hold appeal for all those interested in the critical interrogation of settler-colonial relations, decolonising healthcare, as well as the theory and history of the archive.

Sincere thanks to the NPY Women's Council, Beth Sometimes, and Aidan Hookey for their support of this event.
