PERFORMANCE - Tracing Melancholy: lute works from Dalza to Dowland
Experience a unique, in situ performance by lutenist Rosemary Hodgson, inspired by the works of 'Albrecht Dürer’s Material Renaissance'.
Played for kings, queens, and artists such as Dürer himself, the lute has been celebrated as a vehicle for understanding human emotion and desire. Now, lutenist Rosemary Hodgson presents a unique performance of early lute music, inspired by the famous print Melencolia I in the Dürer exhibition at the University of Melbourne.
After the performance, enjoy the exhibition at your leisure or join curators Dr Matthew Champion and Associate Professor Jenny Spinks for pop-up talks in the gallery space to learn more about key collection items.

Duration: 60 minute lute performance, no interval, followed by 30 minutes to view the exhibition. Seating is available.

Join curator and senior lecturer in history Dr Matthew Champion for a tour of the new Albrecht Dürer's Material Renaissance exhibition at Arts West Gallery. Drawing on the University of Melbourne and State Library of Victoria early modern print and book collections, the exhibition features some of Dürer's most famous works, including Melencolia I, the Nuremberg Chronicle and Gutenberg Bible.

SCHOLARS SERIES - Dürer mania: early commerce and collecting of Albrecht Dürer prints
World-renowned art historian and Dürer expert Professor Jeffrey Chipps Smith shares how Dürer sold, bartered, and gifted his prints and how, in the century after the Nuremberg master’s death, his works became prized possessions in princely Kunstkammern and other famous art collections across Europe.

Exhibition Launch
The Faculty of Arts at the University of Melbourne will launch Albrecht Dürer’s Material Renaissance, an exhibition of print culture curated by Jenny Spinks, Matthew Champion, Shannon Gilmore-Kuziow and Charles Zika on 1 August 2024.
Jane Hansen, Chancellor of the University, will open the exhibition, and there will also be a short performance by the renowned lutenist Rosemary Hodgson.
Research for this exhibition is supported by Australian Research Council grant DP210101623 ‘Albrecht Dürer’s Material World - in Melbourne, Manchester and Nuremberg’.

RARE BOOK WEEK EVENT - Exhibition Floor Talk
Exhibition curators Jenny Spinks, Matthew Champion, Shannon Gilmore-Kuziow and Charles Zika will present an in-depth encounter with German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) and the material culture of his home city of Nuremberg.
With over eighty items from the University’s Special Collections alongside loans from State Library Victoria, exhibits include a leaf from the Gutenberg Bible, Dürer’s Melencolia I engraving, and some of the most important books and prints of this period, including the famous 1493 Nuremberg Chronicle and Dürer’s own Treatise on Measurement.

RARE BOOK WEEK EVENT - Panel discussion: Albrecht Dürer’s Innovations in Book Illustration
Speakers: Dr. Petra Kayser, Hansen Associate Professor Jenny Spinks and Professor Charles Zika.
This session focuses on illustrated books and related prints by German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528), drawn from the NGV’s rich holdings, including examples of his early work as a book illustrator, the Apocalypse in a Latin and a vernacular edition, a range of devotional books and illustrated scientific treatises. The speakers will discuss the technique and historical context of their production to highlight Dürer’s ambition and originality, as well as the breadth of his knowledge.
