Course enrolment information
Step 2: Once you have reviewed your course structure and discussed your coursework with your supervisor, you are ready to finalise your enrolment
Check you are ready to enrol
Before you begin, make sure you have:
►Accepted your course offer online, set up your student account and completed administrative enrolment? See the Get Started page for Graduate researchers (domestic) and Graduate researchers (international).
► Reviewed the coursework structure in the Step 1: Overview of course structure page
► Agreed with your supervisors on your coursework subjects and official start date
If your course offer includes conditions, these must be met before proceeding with your enrolment request.
International students should begin the student visa process as soon as the Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) is issued.
Submit your enrolment request
Once the above steps are complete:
- Complete your administrative enrolment step (refer to the Get Started page). The final step of the process involves checking a box to accept the enrolment terms and conditions.
- Submit the Arts Graduate Research Enrolment Request Form at least two weeks before your nominated start date and no later than 1 February.
- Register for Faculty Orientation and Induction sessions.
Important note:
- Graduate research students cannot self-enrol in coursework or research subjects via the Study Plan in the student portal. The Arts Graduate Research Team will enrol you once your enrolment request is approved. Stop 1 does not support graduate research student enrolments.
- You do not need to book an appointment with the Arts Graduate Research Team to finalise your enrolment. Your enrolment will be processed automatically based on your enrolment request submitted and finalised on your nominated start date.
- Before submitting your enrolment request, you must discuss and obtain pre-approval from your supervisor for your nominated enrolment start date and coursework subject selection.
- You will receive a confirmation email within 1-2 business days of your nominated start date.
- All students must commence on campus by the first day of Semester 1. Late arrival or late enrolment is not permitted.
Managing your coursework selection
- PhD candidates: nominate your elective in the enrolment request form. Refer back to Step 1 for details on coursework structure, available electives, and substitution.
- Master by Research candidates: coursework is not compulsory, but you are encouraged to enrol in the Arts PhD Intensive workshop subject and/or electives that support your research.
Requesting a substitution (if relevant)
You may substitute another graduate-level coursework subjects from the University Handbook with approval from your supervisor.
Your Enrolment Request Form must include:
- Written approval from your principal supervisor explaining how the substitute subject align with your PhD research; and
- Approval from the subject coordinator of the substitute subject to participate in the subject. You will find the subject coordinator contact details in the subject Handbook.
What happens next?
- Attend the Faculty Orientation and School Induction Day (attendance is mandatory).
- Review the Onboarding Information and New Graduate Research Student Induction Module on Canvas.
- You will be enrolled on your nominated start date, and notified by email once your enrolment is reflected in the system.
Enrolment FAQ

Your enrolment will be finalised on the day of your nominated start date.For international student visa holders, you must be on campus to be enrolled.
You will receive confirmation of your enrolment to your University student email address within 1-2 working days of your nominated start date.

Stipend payments are made on set Fortnightly pay days and it takes 4 weeks to you receive your first payment. Make sure you have accepted your scholarship offer, correctly supplied your Australian bank account and address details, and fulfilled all other applicable conditions of your scholarship.

You can collect your student card only after your enrolment is finalised. Once your enrolment is reflected in the system, you'll receive an email notification. After receiving the enrolment confirmation, you can then request and collect your student card from Stop 1.

Once you've completed your administrative enrolment online and submitted your Enrolment Request form, you have completed everything you need to at this stage to finalised your enrolment.
You do not need to make an appointment with the Arts Graduate Research Team to finalise your enrolment. Instead, please make sure you attend the Orientation and School Induction Day during O-week.
We’ll complete your enrolment based on your enrolment request form, send you an enrolment confirmation email and advise you when the you can organise your student card at Stop 1.

All PhD subjects are single sitting and you do not need to register for classes. Please refer to the Handbook for subject delivery mode and timetable. The expectation is that you will attend the PhD coursework component on campus and meet the residency requirement in the first 12 months of your candidature (unless you are a joint PhD candidate based at the partner institution).
